Flowing economic benefits
Hanlons home base in regional NSW, Tamworth is set to benefit significantly from the flowing economic benefits of the Inland Rail project.
Labelled Inland Rail’s ‘concrete commitment to regional Australia’ one of the latest deals between ARTC and Australian businesses is the $67 million contract with Humes Tamworth for the provision of concrete culverts for the Narrabri to North Star (N2NS) section of the project. This is a huge win for our regions and a strong demonstration of the ongoing economic benefits Inland Rail is bringing to regional Australia.
Humes have previously manufactured and delivered concrete culverts to Inland Rail on other sections of the project such as Parkes to Narromine. The concrete culverts are concrete pipes and boxes that help manage the water flow underneath the track assisting with drainage. The N2NS section of the Inland Rail will require Humes to manufacture 5,100 culverts to be installed alongside 116,396 concrete sleepers from Mittagong, 224,939 sleepers from Wagga Wagga and 2,474 165m long lengths of steel from Whyalla (Rail Express).
There is an evident economic flow through the regions that is set to be felt for years to come with manufacturing in regional NSW supporting local jobs. 11 project sections are yet to be built providing opportunity for more engagement between ARTC and Australian business. The end result will further contribute to long-term sustainable growth.
For many regional businesses like Humes, engaging with Inland Rail has encouraged a drive for skills and training leading to an investment in strengthening all aspects of business. Regionally based and owned businesses are contributing significantly to the design and delivery of the Inland Rail, demonstrating that there are skills to employ in the regions. At we continue to progress the careers of our staff and close the gap with formal qualifications. Our expansive presence throughout the regions has also enabled us to set up in the Central West to further our support on regional projects. This keeps local knowledge, experience and expertise on the ground.
